Today, we would hardly be able to live without our mobile phones and texting. We use it for everyday communication to get by each day but have we ever wondered how SMS started?

The Short Messaging Service (SMS) was developed in the 1980s in collaboration with the Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications – the basis for modern mobile phones. SMS inventors wanted a simple messaging system that worked differently from a pager. They wanted a system which would receive messages even if the device was turned off or was out of signal range. It is believed that the first text message was sent to the United Kingdom in 1992.

Because SMS came about in Europe, it is no longer surprising why it took quite a while before it became a widespread practice in the United States. To date, texting is more greatly enjoyed by Europeans as compared to the Americans

Why does an SMS have 160 characters?

August 27th, 2008

The Short Messaging Service was designed to deliver short messages like numerical pages. This program was designed as such in order to prevent system from overloading with none standard send-and-reply operations; thus the limitation of 160 characters per text message was agreed upon. Note however that the 160-character length does not apply all the time. Length limitations may depend on several factors like mobile network, mobile model and the wireless carrier. Some mobile phones were designed for 160-character length alone so you can no longer type once you exceed the 160 characters. With some mobile services, you may keep typing regardless of the number of characters but your message will be chunked into characters of 160 and will be delivered as separate messages.
